Vivid Cloudscape - Sydney, Australia

Description

An interactive installation of architecture and light inspired by the childhood pastime of gazing up into the clouds, Cloudscape reflects its surroundings in ever-changing ways and aims to fully engage each of its visitors. By day, Cloudscape reacts to weather and wind. And by night, it fosters dynamic shadows as visitors play beneath it, stirring positive energy as they act as clouds themselves. When enough energy is stirred, Cloudscape bursts into a storm! A squall of dynamic lighting effects responds to visitors, transforming the installation into an unexpected interactive exchange of energy, which incorporates all who are present. Cloudscape is the vision of Nicolas Thioulouse and Kim Nguyen-Ngoc, of Woods Bagot, two of Sydney’s brightest up-and-coming architects. It is constructed of different sized Mylar balloons and a solid grid structure. The installation’s electrifying and interactive “lighting” storm qualities are made possible by Traxon’s Dot XL and String RGB products. Both bright, ultra-flexible Media products have individually-addressable pixels, which allow the designers full control of the light intensity necessary to create realistic lightning storm effects. The Dot XL and String RGB systems are paired with e:cue’s Butler, a DMX512 replay engine, and are automatically triggered via touch sensors to replay their pre-programmed lightning effects. Cloudscape was created with additional collaboration from Michael Day, Frank Maguire, Victoria Bolton, and Kristin Deray, as well as Traxon’s Elite Partner INLITE. The installation was fabricated by Elan Construct. Traxon was able to deliver the dynamic lighting solution to Cloudscape by combining its expertise in project management, with the collaboration of Cloudscape’s outstanding team of partners and industry professionals.
